Time to go fishing

"Thorsten fiskares tröja" (Fisherman Thorsten's sweater) is washed and blocked but not quite dry yet. I look forward to trying it on!

One of the many things I love about this yarn, BC Shetlandsuld, is how soft it becomes once the garment is washed and blocked. It's slightly rough to work with, which I like, but not scratchy to wear.

Bernadette asked what I think of Drops Lace, which I mentioned in my previous post. I think it's a very nice yarn for shawls. I'm not very fond of 100% alpaca, but it makes a huge diffence that it's a alpaca-silk blend. The silk not only adds some weight and a lovely sheen, but it also makes it less slippery to work with. It's the first time I try it, though, so I don't know yet how it will be affected by washing and blocking. To be continued!

I was lucky enough to win the latest book from Korsstygnsbolaget in a lottery! As "The winner takes it all" I'm going to keep the sweater for myself too - but I will make an exception when it comes to the shawl :)

BC Shetlandsuld är ett av mina favoritgarner: det är lite strävt att arbeta med, vilket jag gillar, men blir mjukt när man tvättar och sträcker det färdigstickade plagget. Nu väntar jag bara på att "Thorsten fiskares tröja" (från "Ylle & bläck" av Celia B. Dackenberg fast med en del ändringar) ska torka, så att jag kan prova den. 

Apropå garner, i mitt förra inlägg skrev jag att jag håller på med en sjal i Drops Lace. Det är första gången jag stickar med det och jag tycker att det verkar vara ett riktigt bra sjalgarn. Jag är inte så förtjust i ren alpacka (för halkigt för min smak) men det gör stor skillnad att det är blandat med silke. Det får lite tyngd och en så fin lyster också. Återstår bara att se hur det beter sig när det tvättas och sträcks.

It took a while to choose between blue and green as contrast colour for the neckband, but I finally settled for blue. I generally think green and red is a better colour combination than blue and red, but in this case they won't be next to each other. What's more, this shade of green is so dark and close to the shade of dark grey that it might not show - and as a friend said, what's the point of a contrast colour if there isn't much of a contrast?

Another friend joked about my initials on the gusset: "Does it stand for i armhålan (in the armpit)?" A week later it still makes me laugh :)

I first tried joining body and saddle using a three-needle bind-off, but it resulted in rather too thick ridges on the wrong side, so I'm grafting them like Maria suggested.

Det var inte helt lätt att välja kontrastfärg till halskanten trots att jag inte hade mer än två att välja på: mörkgrönt med inslag av blått och mörkblått med inslag av grönt. Det blev den blå till slut; det som avgjorde saken var att den gröna är så mörk att en smal kant kanske inte skulle synas intill det mörkgrå. Som en vän sade, det är ju inte så stor mening med en kontrastfärg om det inte blir en kontrast.

En annan vän fällde en kommentar om initialerna på ärmkilen som fortfarande får mig att skratta högt: "Står det för i armhålan?"

Jag håller på och monterar sadeln med maskstygn, som Maria föreslog. Först provade jag att plocka upp maskor längs kanterna och avmaska dem tillsammans med maskorna på fram- respektive bakstyckena, men det blev lite för stumt och klumpigt på avigsidan.

Sleeves and gussets - ärmar och kilar

First of all, thanks for all your kind comments on my previous post!

Ron asked about checkerboard borders, whether they are typical here. I would say they are not uncommon but not exactly typical. Personally, I like how it looks and enjoy knitting it more than stripes as I see progress more quickly. I was quite intrigued by Carolina's comment about checkerboard traditions in other cultures.

It seems I'm going to keep this sweater for myself - those are my initials if you look at the sleeve gusset! (Of course it could mean simply that I made it, not that I necessarily own it, so we'll see how I will interpret it once the sweater finished - and I have tried it on!)

sleeve decreases - ärmminskningar

I'm happy with the sleeve decreases. I usually go for one of two options: hiding the decreases as much as possible or accentuating them to turn necessity into a decorative element, like in this case. I think it has a kind of calming effect in this kind of pattern separating the decreases with a dark grey and a white column, and they go well with the side columns too (which is where I got the idea from).

The cuffs are striped like the bottom border but with the saddle pattern on the inside. I like details that aren't obvious at first sight. The body starts with a red picot edge; the sleeves have a red edge too, but not picots.

I will use a similar pattern for the neckband: stripes, a contrast colour for the edge. Probably not red but perhaps green or blue.




När jag formar ärmar (oftast med minskningar, eftersom jag gillar att plocka upp maskor runt ärmhålet och sticka ärmarna uppifrån) brukar jag försöka att antingen gömma minskningarna så gott det går eller framhäva dem genom att utnyttja dem till ett extra mönster. I det här fallet valde jag det senare med minskingar på var sida om en mörgrå och en vit rand. Jag tycker att det passar ihop med mönstret i sidan på tröjan och så har det liksom en lugnande effekt - det skulle bli rörigt där minskningarna möts.


Under ärmen har jag gjort en kil och på den ena har jag stickat in mina initialer, så det verkar som om jag får behålla den här tröjan - också. Visserligen skulle det kunna innebära att jag helt enkelt har gjort tröjan, inte att jag nödvändigtvis är ägare, men jag lutar ändå åt den första tolkningen. Vi får se när den är färdig och jag har provat den. Kanske ändrar jag mig då!


Muddarna är smalrandiga för att passa ihop med nederkanten på tröjan, men i stället för röda uddkanter har jag nöjt mig med ett rött vikvarv. På insidan har jag samma rutmönster som över axlarna; jag är svag för detaljer som inte syns med en gång. Halskanten kommer också att bli smalrandig, har jag tänkt mig - fast kanske med en annan kontrastfärg. Grönt eller blått ligger bra till.

Sweater progress

Back and front done and armhole steeks cut; next step will be joining the shoulders.

Knowing roughly but not exactly what I want to achieve I've been thinking, testing, ripping out, reknitting, rethinking and so on and so forth for a couple of weeks. I've practically made up my mind now:

• Keeping the original design's black and white square pattern.
• Knitting separate saddles instead of finishing the back and front parts with the squares.
• Skipping a horizontal border pattern between main pattern and squares.
• Incorporating the saddle live stitches from the provisional cast on and the last row when knitting the sleeve and neckband.

Carolina asked about blocking and using a frame when stitching. I have thought about using frames to make blocking easer, but like the freedom without a frame: easier both to turn while stitching and to carry around. (I sometimes stitch on trains and buses.) Blocking it to get the right shape can be quite difficult, thouhg, but I guess you can see it as good exercise.
